Gulu, Omoro teachers applaud NIE

Primary teachers from Gulu and Omoro districts have applauded the initiative by New Vision to develop a Newspaper in Education NIE pull out noting that a great teaching aid during lessons.

During an evaluation exercise carried out on Wednesday in Gulu municipality, the teachers said they have been able to teach all subjects like Mathematics, English, science and SST well with aid of the pull out.

The teachers noted that apart from the NIE pull out, the entire newspaper is resource full in encouraging the pupils to learn reading and write.

Vincent Onencan a teacher at Oguru primary school in Awach sub-county Gulu district said they use the papers to develop the critical thinking and problem solving ability of the pupils a project that was initiated by the British council.

"When I was teaching reproductive system as a topic in science I did not find any problem in illustrating to the pupils because I had a paper which had the exact drawing," Morris Okello a teacher at Opit trading centre said.
 Richard Odong from Kiju hill primary school Gulu district however expressed concern of delay in delivering the newspapers to schools thus causing boredom.

Odong also noted that while they  use the papers to enhance reading during assemblies, the pupils get bored because of over repeating them.

John Eremu, the New Vision features editor told teachers to encourage their pupils embrace writing there owns stories for publication in Toto magazine.
In a similar voice, Jovita Ajuna the Toto magazine editor asked teachers to be creative and use the papers to teacher lower classes than restricting themselves to high classes.

 
Over 25 schools in Omoro and Gulu district are benefiting under the Save the Children pattern ship and New Vision where they regularly receive the papers to aid in the learning process
