Re-arrested Kaweesi murder suspect face terrorism charges

In an interview with New Vision Yesterday, Police spokesperson Emillian Kayima said they could be charged with terrorism and treason. The suspects are Ahmada Shaban Ssenfuka, Umar Maganda, Abdul-Majid Ojerere and Ibrahim Kissa.

They were bundled into a waiting vehicle by armed plain-clothed security operatives on their way back home.

"We are jointly with the Army investigating the possibility of those four men involving themselves in a number of terrorism acts together with the Allied Democratic Forces (ADF) rebel group. Right now, I cannot confirm the exact charges, but they are most likely to be charged with terrorism and treason," Kayima said.

Kayima revealed that their case file is yet to be forwarded to the Director of Public Prosecution (DPP) for legal advice. 

"We are mindful of the law because whether the suspect is a minor or a capital offender, there is a time frame for which they should be produced in courts of law," he explained.

Alex Muwonge, a relative to Maganda on Wednesday told New Vision that they have been denied access to the suspects by officers at Nalufenya detention facility in Jinja district, where the suspects are said to be held.

Meanwhile, the High Court in Kampala is slated to hear an application of habeas corpus filed by their lawyers, seeking orders to compel security organs to unconditionally release or produce them in court from where they are being held incommunicado. The court will hear the case on November 21.
