Rukunya defends Nakuru Open Squash tournament

The Uganda seed two consequently bagged the biggest prize of Ksh30,000

Nile Special USPA Squash Player of the Year 2016 Ian Rukunya beat Paul Kadoma 3-2 in an all Ugandan final to win the KenGen Nakuru Open for the second year running.

The Uganda seed two consequently bagged the biggest prize of Ksh30,000 while Kadoma got Ksh20,000.

Rukunya beat John Kahara 2-0 in the second round after a bye in the first, before eliminating Jay Shah with the same score in the third.

He then saw off another Ugandan, Makerere University's Joel Kasibante 2-0 in the quarter finals before eliminating Leon Keya with a 3-1 win in the semis.

On his part Kadoma who was playing his first final in Kenya, beat Paul Kiambuthi and Peterson Karingithi with a similar 2-0 score in the first and second rounds respectively before eliminating Sam Kyagulanyi and James Dalidi 3-0 and 3-1 in the quarter and semifinals respectively.

The two will now be joined by Michael Kawooya and seven other Ugandans in the Parklands International Open tournament at the Parklands Sports Club, November 15-18. The Ugandan team is captained by Sam Kyagulanyi.

Last year Rukunya became the first Ugandan finalist in the annual tournament despite losing the final.

"It was a great tournament. A level head, calm composure and good shots did it for me. Because Kadoma is a good retriever of the ball and a hard hitter so I had to use my head and slow down the pace," Rukunya said of his win.

Last year Rukunya beat Rukunya beat Kenya's Billy Josa 3-0 in the final to win in Kenya for the first time.
