Acholi adolescents equipped with skills to fight vulnerability

While addressing participants, the minister of state for youth Florence Kiyingi Nakiwala urged adolescents to remain focused so as to achieve their dreams

"Sometimes we are discouraged from reading hard by our friends which affects our academic performance.

"Negative attitude and failure to make good decision coupled with indiscipline are among the factors that hinder us from achieving our goals," said Mary Fortunate Atimango a student from Sacred Heart Secondary School in Gulu.

Atimango was highlighting challenges that adolescent grapple with during the Adolescent Girl Agenda regional meeting at Bomah Hotel in Gulu
Friday.

The regional dialogue organised by Organisation of African First Ladies Against HIV/AIDS (OAFLA UGANDA) attracted over 50 adolescent girls and boys, Parents, teachers, district leaders and duty bearers, representatives from Civil Society Organisations, cultural and religious leaders from districts in Acholi-sub region.

During the dialogue, participants explored issues affecting the adolescent girl, empowering them with knowledge, skills to overcome vulnerabilities for example child marriage, teenage pregnancy, female genital mutilation, violence, rape and school dropout that hinder them from living their dreams.

While addressing participants, the minister of state for youth and children affairs Florence Kiyingi Nakiwala urged adolescents to be disciplined and remain focused so as to achieve their dreams.
