The Uganda Business and Technical Examination Board (UBTEB) has reported an increase in the numbers of candidates who will sit for the national examinations this year.

In the examination slated for November 13 to December 15, the examination body has registered 86,342 candidates from 62,896 in 2016 representing a 37% increment.

Speaking to journalists at UBTEB headquarters in Kampala yesterday, Dr Wilfred Karukuza Nahamya, the UBTEB deputy executive secretary attributed the increase to appreciation by Ugandans for vocational courses in the country.

"Parents are starting to realise the need for vocational skills and the Government has also increased sensitisation on the need for practical skills. This explains the increase in number of candidates who are to sit for this year's national examinations," he said.

The candidates will be examined in both theory and practical skills.

The certificate in vocational and technical studies has attracted the biggest number this year, registering 22,491 candidates.

In regard to examination malpractice, UBTEB has deployed 500 reconnoiters and scouts, over 1,000 supervisors, area co-ordinators and Police to ensure vigilance at 413 examination centers countrywide.

Bernard Mugen, the principal officer in charge of Examinations Planning and Development noted that they have massively deployed to ensure curb examination leakage and cheating that would distort the assessment.

"We are prepared for the examinations and determined to deregister and prosecute any officer who might attempt to leak examination or cheat for students," he warned.

Nahamya highlighted that UBTEB has issued all examination materials to examination centres that will be used during the conduct of this years' examinations.
