GULU | BALAALO PASTORALISTS

Residents of Ongedo village in Palaro sub-county in Gulu district have said their crops are being destroyed by cattle belonging to pastoralists commonly known as the balaalo.

The locals complained to district leaders during a meeting yesterday.

Vinancio Omony, a resident of Ongedo, said he lost two hectares of sorghum and Simsim after his garden was destroyed by the cattle.

Gulu LC5 chairman Martin Ojara Mapenduzi accused the Palaro LC3 chairman, David Ngole, of bringing the balaalo to the area and extorting money from them.

Ngole, however, refuted the allegations saying the people of Palaro were renting their land to the Balaalo.

He said he would organise a meeting on Friday next week with the affected communities.

Gulu Resident District Commissioner Capt. Santos Okot Lapolo lamented that the  balaalo issue has been dragging on for too long.
