At least 900 students of Kabale Secondary School in Kabale district have been suspended for participating in a violent strike at the school.

Chaos at the school started on Friday afternoon following a fight over a girl by two rival groups. A Senior Six student had reportedly made advances towards a girl who was in a relationship with a Senior Four student, which prompted the fight.

The students went on rampage and destroyed property belonging to the school's neighbour identified as Rodgers Habomugisha. Anti-riot Police was called in and they used tear gas and live bullets to disperse the rowdy students

The Deputy Internal Security Officer for Kabale district, Kenneth Birungi, said the  security team held a meeting with the school administration and decided to send away the students to avoid more chaos.

He said the school board will decide the fate of the students.

Kabale secondary school headteacher Edwin Babimpa said the administration will consult relevant authorities before any other step is taken. Police were still heavily deployed at the school by the time of filing this story.

The suspension of students at Kabale SS comes just a few days after 49 students of Kigezi High School, also in Kabale, were expelled after a violent strike. On October 16, students set ablaze the prefect's dormitory known to them as the White House.

They also burnt the house used by their senior man teacher, James Katureebe. The students went on a rampage after the school management expelled four of their colleagues for their alleged involvement in sexual relations, contrary to the school regulations.
