Bishop warns against arresting Ugandans in red

The Bishop wondered whether the Police would pounce on religious leaders who wear red.

AGE LIMIT | RED COLOUR ARRESTS

The Bishop of Kasana Luwero, Paul Ssemwogerere, has asked the Police to exercise caution when arresting people dressed in red, saying it is just a colour like any other.

Ssemwogerere made the call on Friday while preaching at Kisubi Mapeera Secondary School off Entebbe Road in Wakiso district.

Lately, the colour red has been associated with those against the proposed amendment of Article 102(b) of the Constitution that seeks to lift the age limit. The current provision puts eligibility from 35 and 75 years.

Several opponents, especially legislators, have donned red clothing and headbands.

The Bishop asked Police to execute its constitutional mandate and ensure law and order.

"You can't start arresting anyone because they are dressed in red colour clothes. People have freedom to dress in the colour they want, as long as they keep law and order," he said.

Ssemwogerere observed that if Police makes blanket arrests of all those dressed in red, it will create an impression that the country is under tension, whereas not.

He said as long as there is no indecency, red is appropriate. He noted that some religious leaders also dress in red. The Bishop wondered whether Police would pounce on them too.

At the same Holy mass, which also coincided with the school's 18 anniversary, he blessed senior four and six candidates preparing for their final examinations and also confirmed 20 students.

Corruption
Ssemwogerere bemoaned corruption, saying the ulcer is a worldwide problem.

"A young person completes university and immediately builds three flats and drives expensive cars. Instead of questioning him, people praise him, well-knowing he got everything from corruption," he said.

The prelate said Pope Francis has consistently branded corruption an evil deed.

He asked the congregation to pray for Uganda's political leaders and condemned the fracas that played out in Parliament two weeks ago. The Bishop wished those injured a quick recovery.

Ssemwogerere called them to love and serve everybody and to avoid greed.

Contraceptives for primary school children
Ssemwogerere applauded the education ministry for listening to the cry of Ugandans about contraceptives in schools.
