Health experts have advised Ugandans to change their lifestyle and eat well to avoid heart complications.

Dr. Tom Mwambu of Uganda Heart Institute (UHI) appealed to Ugandans to avoid risk factors associated with heart diseas, among them eating fatty food, using cooking oil with high concentration of cholesterols and red meat.

"Fat from ovals, margarine, ghee from cows and red meat is dangerous for your health," Dr Mwambu told hundreds of people who turned up to celebrate the World Heart Day in Kampala.

He advised the population to eat white meat, use sunflower and olive oil for frying food and eat chicken and fish in large amounts.

He, however, warned against eating chicken skin as it has high cholesterol.

The participants were also told to avoid adding raw salt in their food.

"Muchomo on the roadside, popcorns and crisps might endanger your health since such contain a lot of salt," he said.

The executive director of Uganda Heart Institute, Dr John Omagino discouraged the population from going to seek medical help from witchdoctors, but go to the institute for heart surgery since it is capable of conducting surgery rather than going to abroad.
