Hands-on trainees impress at national vocational skills competitions

Vocational skills students produced work that impressed guests and various skills development stakeholders at the 2017 National Vocational Skills Competitions and Expo on Friday.
Students showcased their different competences during the contest that took place at Nakawa Vocational Training Institute, Kampala.
The third edition of the competitions programme saw students from 14 vocational and technical institutes compete in various occupations, including woodwork, automotive mechanics, building construction and metalwork/ fabrication.
Others were electrical installation, electronics, machining, hair dressing, beauty therapy and catering.
During the two-day event, students were tasked with producing particular items in line with their given vocations.

Institutions included Nakawa Vocational Training Institute, St. Benedict Technical Institute, Kisubi; Core Vocational Institute, Wandegeya; Sparkles Vocational Institute, Busia; Kiryandongo Technical Institute and New Horizon Secondary and Vocational School.
One of the participants Catherine Kiyai, a third-year student of Pearl Institute of Cosmetology, who represented the school in beauty therapy, said the competition was an opportunity to express herself.
"This is where I get to gauge my ability because I am going to compete in an open market," Kiyai said before the contest commenced.
The programme is organised by Uganda Skills Competitions Association (USCA). According to the Dominic Kyambadde, the competitions co-ordinator, the programme serves to help trainers assess their trainees in comparison with other market players.
At the end of the competitions, outstanding students were awarded with certificates and prizes.
