A fine artist for a long time, Joanita Nakigudde recently decided to try her hand at fashion designing. But even in her wildest dreams she did not think she would make a big impact, so soon. But she did, when she was declared winner of the 4th SEED fashion show held at the Kampala Forest Resort in Muyenga on Thursday night.

"I'm very happy and excited," she said after the show. "I never imagined this could happen to me, and I'm really thankful. I feel grateful and blessed, and thank the organisers for recognising my efforts."

The SEED (Skilled Expressive Entrepreneurial Designers) fashion project is organised by the Uganda US Embassy together with designer Ras Kasozi to mentor young fashion designers and give them skills they will need to build careers in fashion design. This was the fourth time the project is held.

This year the participants spent time in Fort Portal and were encouraged to use local materials they found there to create their designs. They were asked to use local dyes from natural materials on their outfits.

For the second year running, the SEED show has also marked the beginning of the Kampala Fashion Week, which continues on Friday and Saturday and will feature 12 designers.
