This was revealed by Fr Peter Ssennyondo, the Dean of Kanoni Deanery (the organisers of the celebrations), during the event’s fundraising function at Pope Paul Memorial Hotel on Saturday.
The Roman Catholic diocese of Kiyinda-Mityana requires at least sh60m (sixty million) to organize its annual day, which will take place at Kiyinda-Mityana Cathedral on November 26.
This was revealed by Fr Peter Ssennyondo, the Dean of Kanoni Deanery (the organisers of the celebrations), during the event’s fundraising function at Pope Paul Memorial Hotel on Saturday.
He appealed to Catholics and all people of good will, to make financial donations towards the preparation of the function. He asked the people to deposit the money in Centenary Bank, on account number: 3201388447. (The account name is: Kanoni Deanery). About sh18m (eighteen million) was raised in cash and pledges during the fundraising function.
Bwanika unhappy with Inter-religious Council
The District chairman of Wakiso, Matia Lwanga Bwanika used the function to express his displeasure with the Inter-religious Council’s proposal to government, to organize a referendum on the contentious issue of lifting the Presidential age limit.
“Brethren, in the Catholic Church we have a moral code that prohibits us from blaming our religious leaders in public. But I am sorry to say, I didn’t understand the statement that was issued by the Inter-religious Council.”
“The issue at stake is not the referendum, but the legitimacy of removing the constitutional age limit. Is it right? This is the fundamental question we need to address even before we can think of holding a referendum that is subject to mismanagement. By the way, did they consider the cost of holding a referendum?
“The question of retirement is a moral issue. Emanuel Cardinal Wamala retired but he remains the best preacher; when he starts to preach, you don’t want him to finish. Bishop Samuel Balagadde Ssekadde also retired but is still very useful. Chief Justice Emeritus Benjami Odoki has remained as intelligent as ever, even after retiring. Dear our religious leaders, you have studied all the Philosophy and Theology. To whom shall we run to if that is the stand you have taken?”
The religious leaders under their umbrella organization, Inter-religious Council of Uganda, recently issued a statement on the proposed amendment of Article 102 (b) of the Constitution. In their statement, the clerics proposed a referendum, arguing that the issue of removing the age limit was delicate and non-partisan, which was why it was not ideal for politicians to monopolize it.
