The Government has abolished daily parking fees for public transport operators, Col. Tom Butime, the local government minister has said.

"All daily parking fees are abolished with immediate effect," Butime said, revealing that Cabinet has instead opted for monthly payment of parking fees in the bank for accountability purposes.

Butime told journalists at the Uganda Media Centre that privatisation of revenue collection has also been abolished.

The Cabinet decision comes two months after President Yoweri Museveni directed the Prime Minister, Dr Ruhakana Rugunda, to convene a meeting of stakeholders in the informal sector and responsible government officials to harmonise multiple taxation of traders and public transport actors.

Butime, who was flanked by Kampala minister, Beti Kamya, said: "the arbitrary, unregulated and informal category of levies has been the underlying cause of constant disgruntlement, resentment and unrest within the public service vehicle industry, resulting in violence and disruptions of passenger services on many occasions."
