​Miss Earth in tree planting campaign

In an effort to protect the environment, the National Forest Authority (NFA) and Rotaract Earth Initiative are to plant over 10,000 trees, in northern Uganda this year.


With Miss Earth Josephine Muteesi as the ambassador of the campaign, the team will plant trees in Awich sub-county, Gulu district beginning on the 23 September, with the aim of curbing the negative effects of climate change.

Muteesi explained that as the ambassador of mother earth, she will work hand in hand with the partners are able to plant trees not only in northern Uganda, but the entire country.

"We need to work with other partners to sensitize the public on the dangers of tree cutting, and how we can curb climate change effects," Muteesi told the press during a press conference at the Dinning in Wandegya.

The Rotaract Earth Initiative is a project by Rotaractors in Uganda to counter three challenges of climate change, food insecurity, and Primary Health Care. Since its inception in 2015 they have planted over 30,000 trees in partnership with NFA.

The Chair of Rotaract Earth Initiative, Salim Abass Bwanaheri explained that this year not only will they plant trees but will give out five silos and five solar driers for proper food storage and distribution of crop and food seedlings to families in Gulu.

Bwabaheri said that they done the same exercise in the districts of Nakasongola, Busitema and Kabarole. They hold dialogue with the communities on the deforestation, train people on food security and hygiene.

The project according to Bwanaheri says that the project needs sh64m.
