Former Cranes star Lucha passes away

Former Nile FC and Uganda Cranes attacking midfielder Mathew Lucha has passed away battling a long term illness. 

Lucha who passed away on Friday at Jinja Hospital was one of the country's most gifted midfielders had been battling lung cancer and ulcers.

Following treatment of the disease, he was recovering at his residence at Walukuba, Masese.

He was an integral member of the Nile FC team which he captained to become the first team outside central region to win the Uganda Premier League in 1980.

Uganda Football Players' Association (UFPA) in May raised sh2.8m to cater for his medical bills.
