All eyes on Nakamoga at Uganda Golf Open

Sep 06, 2017

She has stood out in other club competitions over the past year

Flavia Namakula began her golfing career as a Makerere University student before dominating the ladies' competition, including winning the annual Tusker Malt Ladies Open five times.

Having been absorbed by professional golf recently, a number of upcoming girls are looking forward to emulating her achievements.

One of them is another Makerere student Bridget Nakamoga, who currently leads a pack of upcoming youngsters including Judith Komugisha, in their quest to take over from Namakula, who by her pro status, is not eligible for amateur events.

Playing off handicap 13, Nakamoga is determined to leave a mark at this year's Ladies Open teeing off on Thursday.

She will draw inspiration from the Johnnie Walker monthly mugs competition where she had made the podium three times this year, more than any lady player at the Uganda Golf Club.

She has also stood out in other club competitions over the past one year and should be able to put a descent performance in the 54-hole competition.

"The good thing I'm now training every day because I'm in holiday and since I'm going to be playing on my home course, I going to surprise some people," Nakamoga stated after competing in the Entebbe Chairman's Cup on Saturday, where she carded 28 stable ford points.

But tough competition waits as Tanzania has entered a strong field of 15 golfers, led by two-time Uganda Ladies Open champion Angel Eaton, who is one of seven single handicappers on the team.

Nakamoga will also have to be at her best to beat the likes of Eva Magala, Irene Nakalembe, Gloria Mbaguta, Katy Kabenge and Jenina Nasimolo who have dominated local one-day local events.
