EMPOWERMENT

MASAKA - Hundreds of women from various areas in Masaka district have undergone training on empowerment aimed at building their confidence and wellbeing.

Project coordinator Sylvia Kateete Gavigan, who is also Uganda's consul to Ireland, said the aim of the program is to reduce incidents of violence in homes.

"Our vision is to reduce the statistics of violence against women by helping them live out true confidence," she said.

Residents from various areas of Masaka as well as from neighbouring districts of Kalungu, Ssembabule and Rakai attended the seminar organized by Self Help Africa, an international development charity.

Gavigan said especially women in rural areas are left behind - and that's the reason they came through Self Help Africa to train them on how they can sustain themselves.

The empowerment program was designed to also help women and young people deal with stress and anxiety through starting small businesses, farming, etc.

Interestingly, even men attended the workshop.

"It was open to those interested in empowering themselves," said Gavigan.

Earlier, area MP (Bukoto East) Florence Namayanja thanked the organizers of the program for efforts to empower her constituents. She called on other well-to-do-people to do the same so as the area continues developing.

Namayanja said many small businesses, especially those owned by women, don't know how to take advantage of opportunities and end up losing out on the potential perks along the way.
