Karuma workers arrested over missing surveying machine

Police in Kiryandongo district have arrested twelve survey workers from Karuma Hydro Power Project in connection with the loss of a surveying machine.

Ekel Martine Ume, the assistant human resource manager attached to Sino II, the sub-contractor, told New Vision that the machine worth over sh90m used in the underground tunnel got lost around Wednesday or Thursday last week.

"Without the machine, working in the underground tunnel has become difficult," he said.

The suspects have been identified as Regan Okello, Daniel Ogwang, Ambrose Bua, Patrick Ogang, Goddy Okeng, Fredrick Oyuku, Bonny Ekweny, Godwin Ssekati, Henry Omara, Sisto Menyin Jimmy Obua and Joseph Okello.

The loss of the machine is part of a series of theft that has rocked Sino Hydro Corporation Ltd where building materials have also been stolen allegedly by workers.

Ume said the arrest of the suspects was ordered by the head of security at Sino, Joseph Mwesige.

They were taken to Kiryandongo Central Police Station where they are being detained pending investigations.

When contacted for comment, the Kiryandongo district police commander Bernard Katwalo said he was not at the station at the time.
