US athletes to train Ugandans

US Olympic gold medalist Jeneba Sylvia Tarmoh and National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Champion Kenyanna Jovonda Wilson will visit Kampala as Sports Envoys between August 4–14.

The U.S Department of State, in collaboration with Sports United has organised athletics clinics in Kampala in which two renowned American athletes will impart skills among Ugandan female youth.

US Olympic gold medalist Jeneba Sylvia Tarmoh and National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Champion Kenyanna Jovonda Wilson will visit Kampala as Sports Envoys between August 4-14. 

"The U.S. Sports Envoys will hold a series of athletic clinics with local athletes in order to increase female participation in track and field in Uganda," a statement from the US Embassy said. 

On August 9, the statement added, the athletes will have an engagement activity with professional Ugandan athletes at Namboole Stadium starting at 9:00 am.

The Sports Envoys will also focus on teamwork, effective communication, building self-esteem, and other lessons learned through athletics.

The U.S. Embassy in Kampala is working with a local athletics club, Tartan Burner Athletics Club, to coordinate the Sports Envoys' Programme and to organize the activities in Kampala, Arua and Kapchorwa. 

Sports Envoys are athletes and coaches who travel overseas to lead programs developed by U.S embassies and consulates. 

The Sports Envoys hold clinics for young people and coaches, participate in community outreach activities, and engage youth in a dialogue on the importance of leadership and respect for diversity.

Sports United manages the Sports Envoy programmes, working in cooperation with the U.S Olympic Committee, U.S sports federations, and professional leagues.
