EC receives funds for local council elections

Aug 02, 2017

Uganda has not conducted local council elections for the last 15 years

The Electoral Commission (EC) is set to conduct elections for local council one and two (LCI &LCII) including elections for women councils across the country.

"We have received the money and by next week, we shall inform the country, when to have these elections," Justice Simon Mugenyi Byamukama, the EC chairperson told MPs on Tuesday.

Byamukama noted that government through the Ministry of Finance had availed the Commission with the sh15.7b required for the elections.

Government had early this year provided the funds for the elections earlier planned for January; however the money was diverted to cater for the hunger crisis which hit several parts of the country in February.

Uganda has not conducted elections for LCI (village) and LCII (parish) for the last 15 years, the last one having been held in 2001 before the country moved from the one-party Movement system to the multiparty system of governance.
