Nakiyemba, Bangi win doubles bronze in Nigeria

The duo won the first and second rounds, beating Nigeria and Ghananian opponents before losing to Nigeria’s Zainab Momoh

Aisha Nakiyemba and Shamim Bangi combined in the women doubles to win bronze in the Lagos International Badminton Challenge in Nigeria over the weekend.

The seed one and two were part of a four-man Ugandan team that also had Jacob Musisi and Herbert Ebayo in the championship held at the Molade Okoya Hall, Teslim Balogun Stadium.

The duo won the first and second rounds, beating Nigeria and Ghananian opponents before losing to Nigeria's Zainab Momoh and Ramatu Yakub, 2-1 (21 -10, 18 -21 and 15 -21).     

But they could not get to the podium in the ladies singles with both of them bowing out at the quarter final stage. 

Nakiyemba won her first and second round matches against Patricia Akpusug  2-1 (15-21 21-14 21-16)  and Ruth Aiyenugba  13-21 21-9 and 21-19 but lost to seed 4, Agery  Mugdha of Indian in the quarter finals, 12 -21  14-21; just like Bangi.

In the men's singles Jacob Musisi lost to Usman Ayo from Nigeria, 19-21 15-21 while Herbert Ebayo lost to the number one seed Misha Zilberman from Israel, 12-21 14-21.

"The main aim of our participation in all these international tournaments is to collect more points in order to get more ranking points in the World Badminton Federation rankings," Nkiyemba stated.  

The championships attracted players from 11 countries.
