After strike, Old Kampala SSS reopens Wednesday

KAMPALA - Old Kampala Senior Secondary School is set to reopen Wednesday this week, nearly two weeks after a students' strike.

Students went on strike after learning that their headteacher Azidah Ntegane Nsubuga was to be transferred to another school.

In a statement, Alex Kakooza, the permanent secretary at the ministry of education and sports says that students are expected to report back to school ready to resume studies.

Each student must be accompanied by a parent or guardian, or else they will not be allowed back in school.

Kakooza says that following the strike, Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA) and the Ministry of Education and Sports immediately constituted a team to establish the cause(s) of the strike.

They then came up with strategies for addressing the causes, including a roadmap for re-opening the school.

"A report has accordingly been finalized and presented to the Ministry of Education and Sports for consideration. While the Ministry of Education and Sports, together with KCCA, draws up a comprehensive strategy for implementing this report, consensus has been reached on the roadmap for re-opening Old Kampala Secondary School," reads the statement.

Senior Four and Six students will report on July 26 (Wednesday), Senior Five and Three on July 27 (Thursday), and Senior Two and One on July 28 (Friday).

Kakooza assures the general public that measures have been put in place to avoid re-occurrence of any form of unrest, as the education ministry and KCCA will maintain a presence during the entire period of re-opening and/or until normalcy and stability is guaranteed.

The strike led to the arrest of two students and left seven injured, as police clashed with students who were destroying school property.
