FDC slams Police over alleged torture of its supporters

Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) party has castigated Police for alleged torture of the party's supporters while being held at Nalufenya Prison in Jinja recently.

The party's supporters and leaders were arrested on Wednesday last week from Kyadondo in Wakiso District and after the arrest, Police spokesperson Asan Kasingye said the supporters were arrested over holding unlawful assembly.

FDC said 56 of the arrested were party leaders and supporters and included Eng. Patrick Oboi Amuriat, an aspiring candidate for party president.

"The detainees have been released on Police bond, but they have signs of torture and this is a matter that we will pursue legally. We would like to thank all our members and leaders that have stood with the detainees during this time," read part of the statement released by the party.

FDC argued that torture, mistreatment, detention without charge by Police and security forces should stop forthwith.

"We call upon all political actors to collectively condemn this unbecoming behaviour of the Police and the NRM regime."

The statement signed by FDC's secretary general, Nandala Mafabi, asked political actors to collectively condemn Police's behaviour.

"Literally, the Uganda Police and NRM regime are fused and this is unacceptable. Politically, we are not allowed to participate freely as registered political parties. At this rate, the situation is soon getting out of hand," read the statement in part.
