He broke up with me but now is sending messages with hearts!

Hey i need help, my boyfriend broke up with me recently because he thought we were drifting apart after we got out of school. He told me that we should just be friends and after that he stopped texting me. Now he is texting me a lot and putting hearts. I am not sure what this means.

Most times he responds quickly. I am kind of confused, when we were together he used to send me long paragraphs about how i am important and so lucky.

He made me believe that he loved me a lot, he also told me that we would last long. He always wanted to hang out with me but i would say no because my mom wouldn't let me. I thought he would understand that. I honestly don't know why he broke up with me
