Bombers promise more at World Championships

The Bombers have promised to work harder to bring more glory to the country after collecting 3 medals from the African Confederation Boxing Championships in Congo Brazzaville.

Addressing the press on return on Wednesday, team captain Shadir Musa Kimera and welterweight boxer Muzamir Kakande who won gold said they were not about relax in their pursuit of excellence.

"I now have to work even harder to win again at the world championships in Germany. I only hope we can be facilitated better with all the equipment and logistics in time," Kakande said.

"We fought well beating top African boxers but I was unlucky to stop at the quarter finals losing to the eventual gold medallist, I only wish we can be more organised next time so that our focus is in the ring," Kimera stated.

The team returned Monday to a small reception by a couple of journalists from different media houses at Entebbe before boxing enthusiast and philanthropist Sam Buchanan alongside Uganda Boxing Federation (UBF) patron Godfrey Nyakana and other officials received them at NCS Lugogo.

Buchanan, who contributed two tickets and US$500 (sh1.8m) before the team travelled and had promised some cash for medals from the championship came good on his pledge when he gave out sh4m to the three Bombers who won medals.

Kakande got sh2m with Geoffrey Kakeeto (Bantam) and super heavyweight David Ayit walking away with sh1m each from Buchanan who promised more and later hosted them to a dinner at his residence in Bukasa.

"I have been a boxing fan since I was 14. I like sports in general and I'm only being patriotic by supporting the boxers because I know sport can uplift the nation. Kenya is known for athletics so it is up to Ugandans to ensure we support our sportsmen so that they can shine on the international stage," Buchanan said

"I will continue supporting the boxers, I only appeal to all able Ugandans to come on board so that we can raise the profile of our sports," Buchanan stated.
