Using fake detergent could be dangerous to one’s life because no one knows what they add in different detergent.

The Uganda National Bureau of Standards (UNBS) has destroyed adulterated liquid detergent (JIK Brand, Herpetic Brand and Vim worth Shs5m in Kikubo over what the agency said was "failure to meet requirements of relevant standards".

New Vision team was there when the raids were conducted in Kisenyi and Kikubo. According to authorities, the fake detergent is available for sale in Supermarkets but mostly in Kikubo.

Barbara Kamusiime, the UNBS spokesperson said that the sale of counterfeit laundry detergent has been on the rise for the last 3years.

"We started seeing this really escalate starting about 3 years ago. It's showing up all over the place and Kikubo is where they come from. We took samples to our laboratories for testing and we found that there was an irregularly high amount of water," said Kamusiime.

The goods were seized and transferred and handed over to Central Police Station, Kampala and Mengo Kisenyi together with the suspect. The matter was reported to CID Officers attached to UNBS for follow up.
Kamusiime said that the seized detergent looked and even smelled like the real stuff, but that there was an irregularly high amount of water in the product.

Using fake detergent could be dangerous to one's life because no one knows what they add in different detergent. Kamusiime advised consumers to buy detergent from big supermarkets because the dealers in fake detergent are so smart.

"You cannot tell by just looking at the product that is why we are advising people to buy from supermarkets which are known for selling genuine products otherwise people will not get value for money," noted Kamusiime.

Consumers who have any questions about the detergents are advised to call the phone number on the label of any legitimate product or contact UNBS offices in Bweyogerere.
