A bus on its way from Bundibugyo district headed for Kampala has flipped, seriously injuring 10 passengers, police say.

The driver of the bus (UAQ 240T) fled the scene, according to the officer in charge of traffic in Bundibugyo AIP Habarulema Benon.

The injured were rushed to Nyahuka Health Centre IV and Kayenje Health Centre III, he added.

Police believe the driver was speeding and failed to negotiate a bend, losing control of the bus, which tipped and made a crashing stop on its side in an area filled with vegetation.

Some travelers aboard the ill-fated vehicle said they had told the driver to reduce the speed but that he had not heeded their calls.

The accident happened at around 6.30am Monday at a place called Chabbi in Busaru sub-county, Bundibugyo district. The previous accidents around that area reportedly happened last year, involving mostly motorcycles (boda boda).

One survivor, who escaped with no injuries, said she was heading to Kampala for business and had planned to return to Bundibugyo later today. After the accident, she aborted her trip and plans to travel on Tuesday.

"I thank God for surviving this accident. God is good!" she told New Vision.

On his part, OC Habarulema cautioned motorists and motorcylists to check their speed while on the highway.

Police investigations are under way to find the fugitive driver.
