Communication experts needed

1. Background

VECO East Africa is a regional programme of Vredeseilanden, a Belgian International NGO. Programs are delivered through VECO Tanzania (Kilimanjaro, Arusha and Manyara Regions) and VECO Uganda (Eastern Region). VECO East Africa's strategies aim to create an enabling environment for smallholder farmers through working on inclusive business relationships with traders, input companies, financial institutions, processors and retailers. We enable smallholder farmers to engage with these market actors by supporting the farmers to organize themselves and build the necessary capacities to create economies of scale, guarantee quality, food safety and sustainability.

2. Requirements from the Consultancy

VECO East Africa has just completed a 3 year Programme (2014-2016) focused on horticulture and staples primarily funded by the Belgium and UK Governments. Impact evaluations have been conducted on the horticulture and rice projects. VECO East Africa now requires consultancy support to produce the following products:\

• 2016 Annual Report building on the 2015 Annual Report (https://eastafrica.veco-ngo.org/ en/news/veco-annual-report-2015
• At least 2 long reads which can be published in the News and Insights section of our website.
• Simple, attractive flier for the new program which incorporates the new Brand. 
• Supporting update of website project pages: https://eastafrica.veco-ngo.org/en/projects

3. Duration and Ways of Working

The work is expected to be completed by 31st August. The consultant will work with VECO teams in Uganda and Tanzania to identify the most interesting issues to be highlighted in the Annual Report. The consultant will also support in depth interviews to be conducted for the long reads ensuring the voice of the beneficiaries comes out clearly. The consultant will use the existing VECO photo database but is expected to capture some new photos during the in depth interviews.

4. Qualifications and Experience Required

• Strong knowledge of communication processes especially in the field of agriculture.
• A Bachelors degree or higher in Mass Communication, Journalism, Social Sciences, Agricultural Sciences, Development Studies and/or Marketing
• Proven experience in developing relevant communication products
• Excellent English language editing skills with good sense of detail, sense for quality.
• Outgoing personality, inspiring, flexible and creative
