The municipality mayor said slot machines have encouraged crime to thrive

Local Council leaders in Soroti have unanimously pronounced themselves on stamping out coin operated vending machines in the municipality saying these encourage laziness among youth.

The machines are used in such a way that a player inserts coins in a slot and pulls a lever that spins symbols on a dial to generate combinations that determine winnings.

The decision to remove the machines was reached at following a well-attended security meeting for LC1s and LC2s convened at the Soroti Municipal chambers.

According to Paul Omer, the municipality mayor, the slot machines have encouraged crime to thrive, thus posing a security threat.

Some of the local leaders who spoke to Radio Rupiny noted that the decision was timely in addressing concerns of laziness among productive youth.

Amuria, Serere and Ngora districts pronounced themselves strongly on the matter and agreed to remove the gambling machines.

They also resolved to fight early morning alcohol consumption saying such practices have escalated poverty at household level as most youth spend more time in such unproductive endeavours.
