This year, the number of candidates has increased to 15,651 from 14,664 in 2016, a 6.3% increase.

Uganda Business and Technical Examinations Board (UBTEB) final examinations have started today (Friday) with a briefing of all candidates across the country.

This year, the number of candidates has increased to 15,651 from 14,664 in 2016, a 6.3% increase.

"The exams will be conducted in two phases, the first starting with the first paper on Monday 15th  up to the 26th of this month. The second phase will start with two exams commencing on 2nd June up to 16th  June," the executive secretary UBTEB Dr Wilfred Nahamya disclosed.

The board registered 8,807 candidates for diploma and certificate in Business programmes, 5,297 for Technical National diploma and higher diploma programmes.

Others are 1,547 candidates for specialised academic programmes including fisheries, meteorology, agriculture, wild life and lands and survey.

Nahamya said the increase in number of candidates is in line with Uganda's strategic plan of increasing equitable access to skills development through increased access to formal training Business, Technical, Vocational Education and Training.

About 400 invigilators have been deployed to different centres to monitor and supervise the candidates.

Nahamya appealed to candidates to desist from any form of malpractices. "The Board's regulations recommend tough punishments for any candidate or institutions involved in malpractice ranging from cancellation of results to withdrawal of a centre number," he said.

Last year about forty six (46) candidates were involved in malpractices out of which two (2) were disqualified from the program. Others were asked to repeat the exams.

The head of quality assurance research and policy Paul Kyalimpa said they have accredited more 12 new examination centres in addition to 432 centres.

Among the districts where the new centres are located include Maracha, Lira, Dokolo, Mbarara, Ntungamo, Sheema, Kampala, Mukono and Hoima.
