The 7th edition of the Uganda Secondary Schools Sports Association (USSSA] Ball Games I, officially starts today with the official opening ceremony at Kabale Municipal Stadium in the heart of Kabale Municipality.

The competition that will last for a week, has attracted 140 schools from around the country, with over 3500 participants.

The participating schools started arriving at the hosting St Mary's College Rushoroza on Saturday and by Sunday, some other teams were still being received.

Schools warned of mercenaries

The issue of schools fielding none students in these competitions has been appearing with schools filing petitions in every other event every year.

However, while addressing the participants Monday, USSSA president Hajji Ali Mugaga cautioned the schools over fielding ineligible players.

"We are warning the games teachers and school administrators that we are very serious on ineligible players this time. And whoever falls victim, they will regret the repercussions," said Mugaga.

Last year, Citizen High School Mbarara was disqualified over the same incident and have not surfaced for this year's event.

Rains a big worry for the games

Ever since the participants started arriving at St Mary's College Rushoroza, torrential rains in Kabale started and have not stopped yet.

This has left officials and payers worried of how these games, which are supposed to last for a week, will be played.
