608 graduate from YMCA Jinja

Out of the graduands 472 received certificates while 136 received diplomas

 

A total of 608 students graduated from YMCA College of Business Studies in Jinja district.

This was under the 16th graduation ceremony that was held at school under the theme ‘Vocational Education and Training for Self-Reliance'.

Out of the graduands, 472 received certificates while 136 received diplomas in various disciplines which included nursery teaching, social development, guidance and counselling, tailoring, cosmetology, computing and Information Technology.

According to Dr Robert Joseph Jjumba, the chairman governing council comprehensive institute and executive director of YMCA said the school builds capacities at all phases.

He explained that the college has ensured they support the government through programs of skilling, business technical education, training for employment and improved standards of living of citizens.

"Our target is to give performance improvement and leadership training programs for the young people to become job makers not seekers," he said.

He decried the challenge of an increase in materials used in the school. He said the school was licensed by the National Council of Higher Education last year to award diplomas adding that their target is to become a university in the years to come.

Lambert Okure Drata the principal of the school was instrumental in grooming youths and historical in providing hand on skills.

However he cautioned the graduands to go for further studies saying with it has no limits. He said with this kind of education over 60% of youths have got employed.

Peter Tuke who got a diploma in catering said skills attained will help him start up his own business. He said he had also learned creativity and hospitality skills.

"I'm now focused because there are limited jobs in the country of late. With the various skills I'm now ready to start up my own business and become a job creator," he said.

Joyce Nalimu who got a certificate in secretarial studies called upon fellow youths not to undermine hands-on skills but instead embrace them.
