Uganda joined the rest of the world to celebrate the occupational safety and health day under the theme ‘optimize occupational safety and health data'.

The day for safety and health at work is observed in commemoration of the workers who lost their lives and in solidarity of those workers who have been injured in the course of their work.

The day was declared by the International Labour Organization (ILO) to promote the prevention of occupational accidents and diseases globally.

During the celebrations at the CHOGM memorial park in Kampala on Friday, it was observed that the day provides an opportunity to look at the ways of protecting co-workers family members, employers, customers and others who might be affected by the workplace environment.

The celebrations were kicked off with a march from the gender labour and social development ministry through the city center to CHOGM memorial park. The march was led by state minister for gender and culture Peace Mutuuzo who smartly dressed to workplace protective gear.

At the park two minutes of silence were observed to remember victims of occupational accidents. Several companies exhibited workplace protective gear and ways how to improve safety at workplace.

Mutuuzo noted that the ministry will continue with the efforts to improve on the occupational safety and health status in the country.
