The required loan will be from BADEA while another half will come from OFID

Parliament has approved a $40m loan to tarmac 29km Luweero-Butalangu Road which links Luweero to neighbouring Nakaseke District.

The 40-year loan is to be obtained from both the Arab Bank for Economic Development in Africa (BADEA) and the OPEC Fund for International Development (OFID), the chairperson of the parliamentary committee of national economy Syda Bumba said Tuesday.

Bumba who is also the MP for Nakaseke North said the money will be put in the next financial year's budget.

UNRA highway specialist, Moses Ochole, said preparations of detailed engineering design and bidding documents had been completed.

Ochole said the proposed project will be a Class ‘A' road with a 20-year design life with pavement surfacing. The road will be 7 meters wide according to him.

He said half of the required loan will be from BADEA while another half will come from OFID.

Ochole said government is to foot a sh21b budget to compensate the affected families whose homes are located in 24 villages in Luweero and Nakaseke.

He said a total of 131.29 hectares of land will be acquired for the implementation of the project.

Bumba said the upgrading of the hitherto gravel road would improve connectivity and spur growth in the region.

She noted that the 29km road leads to important facilities like the missionary founded Kiwoko Hospital and big economic entities like Butalangu Abattoir.

Nakaseke LC5 Ignatius Koomu said the upgraded road will ease movement between Luweero and Nakaseke.

Luweero to Butalangu is a distance of only 29km, but taxi operators charge a staggering 10,000 for a single journey because of the rough road surface.
