Seven held over illegal fishing in Nakasongola

Seven fishermen on Lake Victoria are behind bars at Nakasongola police station,after they were arrested on Friday for using illegal fishing gear and catching immature fish.

The seven suspects, all from Kibuye fishing landing in Nakasongola were arrested during on Friday by the UPDF fisheries
reinforcement department in Nakasongola.

The Commandant  of the Nakasongola based UPDF Marines who is also the commander of the UPDF fisheries reinforcement, Capt .Benon Namanya said his team also recovered illegal fishing nets that were being used by the suspects.

Namanya identified the suspects as :James Okwi, Walter Okello, Robert Sekyanzi and Fred Katushabe. Others are Saddam Ochan, Robert Kania and Lwanga Segawa.

Namanya said his team was patrolling the lake when they got the seven suspects red handed catching immature fish using illegal fishing gear.

He said they will be charged with being in possession of illegal fishing nets and catching immature fish.

The UPDF fisheries reinforcement department was instituted in February last year to help in curbing illegal fishing on Ugandan lakes.
