KAMPALA - Newly ranked Candidate Master (CM) Joshua Katumba will be the man to watch at the two-day Easter Classic Chess Tournament.

It will start this Friday and end on Saturday at Makerere Business School (MUBS).

Katumba attained his maiden title (Candidate Master) at the recent Zone 4.2 African Individual Chess Championships in Ethiopia. He scored 4.5 points in nine rounds of the 2017 zonal championships to qualify for his first title.

The chess player will be joined by fellow zonal representatives Esther Penninah Nannozi and Shakira Ampaire in the open category.

Apart from the open category, there will be two more sets of participants (boys and girls) to compete in the U10, 13 and 16 categories.

According to the Uganda Chess Federation (UCF) general secretary Henry Ategeka, the event is aimed at bringing the chess fraternity together to celebrate the festive holiday.

"We (Uganda chess fraternity) are a family and it's through such tournaments that we get to strengthen the fraternity," he said.

The event will be graced by star players like FIDE Master (FM) Patrick Kawuma, Woman Fide Masters (WFMs) Ivy Clare Amoko and Grace Kigeni in an interactive workshop with the players.
