Swimmers notch personal bests at Seals League meet

Ugandan junior swimmers are developing well going by the results of the second Seals Swim Club League meet that ended at Kampala Parents School pool over the weekend.

National junior swimmer and Silverfin Academy's Selina Katumba who is fresh from competing at the Africa Junior Championships in Egypt where she swam personal bests in the 50m butterfly race in 33.53 and in the 50m freestyle with a time of 30.28 again led by example on Saturday.

In the opening 400m freestyle race she beat her own time of 5:34.45 set in the first league meet by over 29 seconds when she clocked 5:05.54. Team mate Mercedes Mwebeiha who came second also registered a personal best of 5:25.93.

In the boys' category over the same distance Adnan Kabuye also beat his own league meet record of  5:39.58 set in 2015 by over a minute in 4:59.54.

Darren Ssamula (5:01.03), Raphael Sine (5:18.05), Samora Lumonya (5:19.29) and Mikka Kiggundu (5:38.60) also registered new time over the same distance.

Dolphins' Kabuye also led in the 200m breaststroke with 2:56.11, where club mates; Darren Ssamula (2:56.14), Samora Lumonya (3:08.65), Gideon Mbowa (3:10.85) and Seals' Jerome Nsiiro (3:08.73) and Christopher Musenze (3:24.23) also bettered their previous times alongside several other swimmers.

Swimming in the girls' 11-12 years category Seals' Daya Yalonda Mpeera gave a good account of herself by bettering three meet records. Mpeera clocked 32.55, 2:56.23 and 2:51.50 in the 50m butterfly, and 200m backstroke and 200m butterfly races respectively to set new personal bests over the distances where Alexis Kituuka and Kirabo Namutebi played second fiddle.

Her best performance was arguably in the 200m butterfly where she came first in 2:5150 ahead of Silverfins' Selina Katumba (2:59.21), Alexis Kituuka (3:06.30) and Avice Meya in (3:09.84).

There were also new times set for White Reuben, Raphael Sine, Tendo Kaumi, Franchesco Kagugube, Anthea Mudanye and Irankunda Isihaka over several events.

Aquatics' Patrick Rukundo who collected four points more than Seals' Nuwa Senkebe leads the 15 and over boys' category with 46 points two more than the latter. Samora Byansi is 13 points off in third place on 23 points.

Akram Lubega (8&under), John Kafumbe (9-10), White Reuben (11-12) and Adnan Kabuye (13-14) lead the other boys' categories.

Amelia Mudanye, White Heather, Daya Mpeera, Selina Katumba and Avice Meya top the girls' respective categories.

The third league meet will be held in July before the last one in November.
