St. Joseph's College Layibi in Gulu, will this Wednesday start the construction of the long awaited an internally measured swimming Pool as part of the facilities required to host this year's Federations of the East African Senior Secondary Schools Sports Associations (FEASSSA) games, the shall run from August 17-29.

Layibi College headmaster, Robert Ojok confirmed the sh383,884,300 swimming facility, measuring 20 meters wide and 25 meters long will be erected by Century Investments Limited pending formal approval from the bidding results that are at the final stage.

Ojok however revealed the total budget approved to complete the entire construction is at sh508,426,550 to include other infrastructure around and within the swimming pool stadium if fully completed.

He said construction is expected to take 420 days or about three and half months, ending some two months to the commencement of the games. Swimming is expected to be one of the most standardized and the biggest in the country if the work is done well.

Ojok appealled for support from Gulu district local government and all the local governments of the eight districts in Acholi region as well as the Ministry of Education, Sports and Science Technology towards the sports facility, which he said will not only be for the school alone, but for the whole region and the country at large.

Gulu district engineer, Andrew Olal-Obong during final spot check of the site on Monday said the space was large enough to accommodate the swimming pool and its surrounding stadium walls and fencing.

He said the district would send equipment to clear the site on Wednesday morning to kick-start construction.

Olal-Obong appealed to the business community and the people of Gulu to start taking early preparations to erect their business stalls or selling points around Layibi College and Sacred Heart Girls' Secondary schools where the two-week's events will take place in Gulu.

This is the first time for Gulu to host the games on top of many national sporting and non-sporting national functions the district has hosted over the years.
