30 amputees to get free limbs

The handover will be at Mulago Hospital in Kampala

Thirty amputees will on Sunday have smiles lighting up their faces when they get free artificial limbs from Narayan Seva Sansthan Uganda.

Narayan Seva Sansthan Uganda is an association with Indian origins that works to improve the plight of people with physical impairments. It is mainly comprised of Ugandans of Indian origin and Indian nationals living in Uganda.

The handover will be at Mulago Hospital in Kampala.

Confirming the development to the New Vision, Rajesh Agarwal, the chairman of Narayan Seva Sansthan Uganda said the association is also working on corrective surgeries on some thirty Ugandans.

In November last year, Narayan Seva Sansthan Uganda gave out artificial limbs to nineteen amputees.

"We used very flexible and lightweight material to make these artificial limbs so that these people can carry on with their lives with as much normalcy as possible," Agarwal said at the time.

Most of the beneficiaries are victims of the rampant boda boda accidents in the country. An artificial limb costs between sh1.5m to sh2m, out of the reach of many an accident victim in Uganda.

The 2013 Annual Crime and Traffic Report shows that reckless driving caused 1,252 fatalities that year. A significant number of these are victims of the boda boda accidents.
