NWSC GENERATES 240 MILLION LITRES OF WATER FOR KAMPALA EVERY DAY

City water coverage boosted

The project was structured in five components which included the upgrading and rehabilitation of the Gaba Water Treatment Plant (WTP) complex, network restructuring and extension, and the third component was the extension of water supply and improvement of sanitation in informal settlements.

The other components included the construction of new water treatment plants to the east of Kampala and an associated network as well as the accompanying measures and capacity building.

Under Component 1 and elements of Component 2 Kampala Water- Lake Victoria WATSAN (KW-LVWATSAN) project also involved the rehabilitation and water production capacity optimisation of Ggaba water treatment complex and transmission mains improvements. \

The specific objective of the project was to increase water production capacity at Ggaba to eliminate dry zones within Kampala, Wakiso and Mukono that had become persistent. The project involved the rehabilitation of Ggaba Water treatment works to increase production by 50 million litres per day.

It also involved construction of new Transfer Pumping Station and 10km pipeline to Namasuba to transfer water in bulk to the hitherto under supplied western part of greater Kampala, construction of a new eight-million-litre storage reservoir at Namasuba hill which supplies areas along Entebbe, Masaka and Mityana Road.

Also on the project was the reconfiguration of the Muyenga reservoirs to stabilise water supply to the east and the north of Kampala, as well as the relaying of sections of the Naguru transmission pipeline to secure supply to the northern part of the capital. The project also involved the improvement of networks.

In line with the water supply and sanitation master plan developed under this project, NWSC has undertaken a number of works in the network in order to distribute the additional water to customers.

Such works included the construction of 30km of new distribution pipelines in Namasuba, Kabowa, Mutundwe, Kyengera, Ndejje and Lubowa.

There was also the construction of Buloba water supply system, including pumping station two reservoirs and 76km of new distribution network pipework supplying Bulenga, Bulaga, Nakabugo, Bulooba and Bujuko.

Also on the list was the construction of a booster pumping station and transmission main to Naguru reservoir, construction of a reservoir, pumping station and associated pipework for Kanyanya and Gayaza areas and construction of a new reservoir for Lugoba/Kawempe and associated pipework, The project worked on the extension of water supply network to Kiira, Kitikifumba, Mulaawa, Kitukutwe, Bulindo areas and many other supply reinforcements in various areas of Kampala.
