Makerere to face forensic audit

"We found uncoordinating information at the university where by the registrar has over 40000 students on record yet the bursar receives cash for only 37000 students. We want to find out the problem," he explained.

The chairman of the Makerere university visitation committee has said that they are going to conduct a financial forensic audit at the institution.

Dr. Abel Rwendeire told New Vision that this is aimed at explaining the institution's unending financial crisis.

"We found uncoordinating information at the university where by the registrar has over 40000 students on record yet the bursar receives cash for only 37000 students. We want to find out the problem," he explained.

He added this will also help the team ascertain how the university spends the money directly got from government and that paid by the private students.

"If we find any financial crime after our investigations, those implicated would be tried in the courts of law for causing financial losses to the government," he noted.

Rwendeire made the remarks during a benchmarking visit by the committee at Uganda Management Institute (UMI) in Kampala on Wednesday.

He said, "If private institutions without any subsidy from government, can rely only on fees generated to pay well and on time their lecturers and other staff, use the same to put up infrastructure, fund research and above all pay back dividends to their proprietors, where exactly does Makerere put the money it generates, since it doesn't spend on most of the above areas?"

He said the comprehensive inquiry into the way Makerere is managed with a special forensic audit on how internally generated funds are spent would be the lasting solution for the institution's woes.

"I am sure, if this is fixed, Makerere woes would be fixed decisively," he said.
