Edith Byanyima, sister of Winnie Byanyima, wife of Forum for Democratic Change former presidential candidate Dr. Kizza Besigye has snubbed police summons again and said she was not able to turn up as directed by the police.

Byanyima was summoned by the Special Investigations Directorate on Monday for an interview and to record a statement in connection with what the police said uttering sectarian statements and incitement to violence. She however did not turn up on Monday saying she had other engagements.

She told New Vision that she had informed the police that she would instead make it on Tuesday. But again she did not surface and when contacted, Byanyima simply said she was unable to make it.

"I'm not able to make it, I even do not know why they need me, maybe next time," she said. She did not state reasons why she was unable to respond to police summons.

The Kampala Metropolitan Police spokesman, Emilian Kayima on Monday told New Vision that Byanyima had informed Police that she would instead appear at Kireka on Tuesday.

Kayima said that the state was concerned that she uttered sectarian statements which have been circulating on social media and decided to summon her to that effect.  He said Byanyima is treated as a suspect in the case.

On Tuesday Kayima said that he had not been told why she had failed to turn up again, but added that the reason she gave for not making it on Monday was acceptable and remained optimistic that she will finally turn up.

"There is no cause for alarm, on Monday she gave us reasons why she could not make it and it was convincing and acceptable, if she has not come, we know she will not run away, she will come," he said.

Byanyima is alleged to have uttered the statements after a group of legislators and relatives of Kenneth Akena attacked her and her sister Winnie Byanyima for turning up at the High Court to stand surety for Matthew Kanyamunyu, his girlfriend Cynthia Munwangari and his brother Joseph Kanyamunyu who are accused of killing Akena.
