President Yoweri Museveni has donated $23,000 (sh82m) towards the treatment bill of retired Church of Uganda Archbishop Livingstone Mpalanyi Nkoyooyo.

"H.E. @KagutaMuseveni has made $23,000 contribution to settling Archbishop Nkoyooyo's medical bills and wished him a quick recovery," Senior Presidential Press Secretary Don Wanyama tweeted.

Nkoyoyo fell ill in November last year and is going to require emergency surgery in London.

His son Isaac Nkoyoyo said the former archbishop is due for a lung operation in a private hospital in Kensington, Central London.

However, the jolly man of God is stuck in London after his family members failed to raise about £60,000 (about sh265.2m) to cater for his hospital bills.

It is from that background that a fundraising campaign has been launched, appealing to the public to contribute towards the Nkoyoyo's surgery. He was flown out of the country on 31st December.

"I want to call upon members of the public to come in and cooperate to raise my father's medical bills. As a family we are overwhelmed. He had just been in London in June so the timing is not good. Contribute however little you have," said Nkoyoyo's son James Kakembo.

Well-wishers can deposit any assistance to Margaret Nassiwa's (daughter to bishop) on 0772120621 or to Centenary Bank account no. 3201454702.
