IMF chief to visit Uganda

The International Monetary Fund (IMF) managing director Christine Lagarde is to pay a four-day visit Uganda next week. 

According to statement issued from Ministry of Finance, Lagarde will visit from January 25 to 28 at the invitation of President Yoweri Museveni. 

The statement quoted Lagarde as saying about her upcoming visit: "I hope to gain a deeper understanding of your governments' economic agenda, and discuss how the International Monetary Fund can best serve Uganda." 

On his part, the Minister of Finance, Planning and Economic Development, Matia Kasaija described the visit as further enhancement of the already existing cordial and fruitful relations between Uganda and the IMF. 

"Our relationship is historical as well as progressive as Partners. It is therefore very good news that the Chief Executive of the IMF has confirmed Uganda as a key destination on the continent. We look forward to constructive engagement on a wide range of economic and financial issues amongst others during the visit," he stated. 

Lagarde is expected to participate in a number of public and private events while in the country including holding bilateral talks with the President Museveni; the Ministry of Finance and Bank of Uganda authorities.

Other activities which will be confirmed in due course may include a public lecture and interface with representatives of interest groups such as the private sector; financial sector, civil society, academia and legislators. 

Lagard and her delegation will visit Uganda soon after taking part in the annual Davos World Economic Forum.

She is also scheduled to visit the Central African Republic and Mauritius.
