Eight police officers retire, tipped on post-service life

“You have probably built your house but you have not been sleeping in it, go and sleep in it."

Eight police officers from East Kyoga who have retired from public service have been encouraged to start income-generating projects to earn a living.

The advice was given by the regional police commander of East Kyoga, Francis Tumwesigye, during their farewell party.

Also present were RDC Onya Akonopese, district boss Joseph Opit Okojo, MPs Patrick Okabe (Serere County) and Hellen Adoa (Woman MP for Serere).

The party was hosted by East Kyoga Regional police office jointly with the leaders of Serere district at the district headquarters.

The retired officers were also urged to join religious organizations and to avoid drinking clubs, with Tumwesigye pointing out that some officers who retire die a few years later due to frustrations.

SP Jimmy Anthony Oyuku, who has been Serere district DPC, was given a bull as a gift while the rest got goats.

Simon Peter Ogama, who has been the officer in charge of Serere Central Police Station, is now the caretaker DPC.

The chief guest, MP Adoa and fellow MP Okabe each gave Oyuku sh1m.

Okabe said retirement is not the sunset of life, but the sunrise, which if handled well is enjoyable.

"You have probably built your house but you have not been sleeping in it, go and sleep in it. You have a wife and maybe she has not been with you. Go and enjoy with her, it's very important," he told the men.

On his part, Oyuku applauded the district leaders for the cooperation they had accorded to him and the police supervisors for having mentored him ever since he joined the forces on May 1, 1975.

However, he was unhappy that he retired at the rank of Superintendent of Police [SP].

"I thought they would have given me Assistant Commissioner - I would have gone very comfortable. I underwent a lot of training. Some of the trainings I got were out of the country which I performed very well and I got some awards" said veteran servant Oyuku.

Meanwhile, district chairperson Joseph Opit Okojo responded positively to the plea raised by Tumwesigye for allocation of more land for Serere Central Police station.

The other retired officers included: IP Moses Edyangu, IP Hellen Ayuo,  AIP Christopher Engwedu, Sgt Christopher Okanya, Sgt  Charles Omoko, Corporal Wilbert Anyau and Cpl John Auta.
