KAMPALA - The Kabaka of Buganda Ronald Muwenda Mutebi II hosted the Buganda Diaspora Day 2016 at Lubiri, Mengo on Wednesday.

By 3.00pm local time, guests clad in traditional Buganda - men in kanzu (tunic) and women in gomesi - had started to make their way into the royal palace on a hot day.

They included Ugandans living and working in other parts of Africa, Europe, USA, Asia and other areas.

At the colourful event, guests were treated to a cocktail of both food and entertainment. Local musicians like David Lutalo and Maureen Nantume, together with Afrigo Band featured on the entertainment menu.

Traditional dancers and the brass band from Muteesa I Royal University also kept guests entertained.

Kabaka Mutebi was in the company of his wife, Nabagereka Sylvia Nagginda and other members of the royal family.

Buganda Kingdom officials, including Katikkiro Charles Peter Mayiga, were also present at the lively function.

The function that trickled into the deep of the night saw Kabaka Mutebi call upon his subjects within the country and abroad to unite and work together - all while respecting each other.

He also thanked the group from the diaspora for donating an ambulance to the kingdom. On top of that, a well-equipped modern mobile health facility is in offing, he was told.

Meanwhile, selected young people recited a Luganda poem and also shared the experience of growing up in the diaspora.

Some of them cited the lack of enough information on the traditional norms and practices as some of the challenges they face while living abroad.
