Express FC releases 'defiant' players

“We are looking at young players to replace them."

Express FC has let go of nearly half of their squad with plans to replace them during the season break, chief executive officer Hamza Jjunju has said.

The players include defender Bob Kasozi, midfielders Paddy Tebusweke, Rogers Lukwiya, Richard Kigozi and Muhammad Kayongo, strikers Isaac Sserunkuma and John Semazzi and goalkeepers Ali Kiggundu and Ivan Mutumba.

Upcoming forward Yaffesi Mubiru is also in the pack of released players. All were released on recommendation from their new coach Matia Lule.

"We are looking at young players to replace them. These are unknown names from different scouts around the country. We have had 22 players in the ongoing trials and we hope to pick 10 of them to fill the gap," said Jjunju.

But a source on the Express FC technical bench revealed that Lule had to release the players because a number of them are still leaned towards his predecessors.

Express (19 points on the table) have put a dismal performance in the first round of the Azam Uganda Premier League, winning only four matches, drawing seven and losing four to end round of the season eighth on the table led by rivals and holders KCCA FC (32 points).

The Red Eagles management spent a bigger part of the first round debating over who is better between players' favourite coach Wasswa Bbosa and more technical and qualified Alex Gitta.

Although Bbosa was the designated assistant, both coaches always had different starting lineups and players allegiance whenever they went for matches.

They were sacked on the tail of the first round to pave way for Lule now.
