Makerere University reopens

The Makerere University Council has announced that the university had opened "with immediate effect."

It said all staff members will resume work immediately. All students shall return for continuation of first semester on January 2, 2017.

Students shall comply fully with the tuition policy which requires them to complete payment of all fees by the 12 week of the semester (in this instance, two weeks after resumption of studies i.e. January 16, 2017).

Those who had completed fees payment will not have to pay anything.

Council chairperson Eng. Dr. Charles Wana-Etyem said: "arrangements have been made to ensure that students will not lose anytime as a result of the closure of the university."

 He was addressing media at campus's main building.

"A semester is16 weeks. The university was closed after the 10th week. So, students will be allowed (the remaining six weeks) before the second semester opens," council Chairperson said.

He said the decision to open the institution was taken after lecturers "agreed to return to class." Lectures' salaries for November and December (2016) had already been paid.

"The Vice Chancellor will announce later dates for the 2017 graduation ceremonies. But most likely it (graduation) will be held in March," he said.
