Government told to act on famine

The Archbishop of Kampala Archdiocese, Dr. Cyprian Kizito Lwanga has asked government to be more committed to the protection of the environment.

The Prelate also asked government to introduce modern farming methods, in order to stop the hunger crisis that is threatening the country.

"The hunger crisis in our country is largely attributed to environmental change, poor farming methods and lack of giant food stores, locally called ebyagi.  I thus request government to be strict when it comes to reservation of forests, swamps, rivers and lakes. We need to introduce modern farming methods, food security programmes such as agricultural training and food banks," he said.

Lwanga was delivering his Christmas and New Year's message at the Kampala Archdiocese Catholic Secretariat, Rubaga on Friday, December 23.

Lwanga later called upon government to implement the rights and values of the family as enshrined in the constitution of Uganda. He commended President Yoweri Museveni for declaring 2017 as the Year of the Family' and asked all Ugandans to support the President's initiative towards the strengthening and promotion of the family institution.

"Today the family is facing many challenges; many couples no longer value faithfulness in their marriage and as a result, the family suffers emotionally, spiritually and physically. The family is suffering due to alcoholism and domestic violence, poverty and laziness, lack of employment."

"Parents are too busy to guide their children leaving them to the media that proposes a wide variety of things, most of which unfortunately destroy the family. Many people are getting addicted to pornography and sexual deviant behaviors like promiscuity, homosexuality, masturbation and the like," he noted.
