Kampala resident sues British gov't over damaged fence

Kagoro says he had to engage services of a contractor to rebuild his wall fence.

A property owner in Kampala has dragged the UK government to court.

Epimac Kagoro is demanding sh87m as compensation for his fence that was washed away by drainage water resulting from what he calls negligent act of the management of the British Council.

Kagoro is the owner of Plot 6 at Lincoln Lane Kitante which is neighbouring the British Council in Kamwokya.

He is arguing that in total disregard of others, the British Council erected a metallic steel grill in the storm drainage which clogged up and blocked the drainage leading to destruction and subsequent washing away of his perimeter  wall.

Kagoro contends that he had to engage services of a contractor to rebuild his wall fence, incurring huge costs which the British Council has refused to take liability for.

Through his lawyers of Abbas Advocates, Kagoro wants the High Court to compel the British Council to compensate him the amount spent ,pay damages and also an injunction permanently restraining the British Council from interfering with the enjoyment of the neighbor's property.

Court Registrar Alex Ajiji has since asked the UK government  to file its defence within 15 days.

When New Vision contacted the Council's head of communications, Samuel Paice, he said they are aware of Kagoro's claim.

"Kagoro did not consult us about his construction.  However, any work carried out on the British High Commission compound itself is closely supervised and done to the highest possible standards, in line with best practice,'' he weighed in.
